Hurt at Work: Nurses, CNAs, Therapist, EMTs, Healthcare Workers

The last two years have been chaotic for us all, but for Healthcare Workers (Nurses, CNAs, Certified Nursing Assistants, EMTs, Emergency Medical Technicians, Therapists, etc.) unbelievably so. During this time society has rightly recognized healthcare workers as the heroes they have always been, but they have paid a high price-both physically and mentally.

Even before the pandemic, healthcare workers suffered more musculoskeletal injuries than workers in any other industry.

The attached article states that “[t]he rates of workplace violence in health care and social assistance settings are five to 12 times higher than the estimated rates for workers overall, according to a Government Accountability Office report from last year… [and] when it comes to attacks, more than 75 percent of the nurses questioned in a recent survey said they had been abused — physically and verbally, by patients, those trying to get to patients or family members — on the job.”  If you or a family member works in the Healthcare industry, this is not surprising news as- according to the American Journal of Critical Care- every day approximately 9000 healthcare workers sustain a serious injury while performing their job duties.

Moreover, did you know that 60% of Nursing Assistants and CNAs suffer job injuries as a result of their job duties (I would hazard to guess that the number is actually higher), or that they are wont to suffer back injuries (around 4 times as likely) than any other industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 12 out of 100 workers in State operated Nursing Homes suffered nonfatal work injuries last year (construction workers had around 8 out of 100 workers suffer job injuries; an average of all jobs is 3 out of 100).  See the the attached article.

When you think about what our Healthcare professionals do (spending the majority of their days on their feet, having to react quickly, twisting and turning and lifting heavy objects-including patients), it makes sense, and healthcare workers’ jobs have only gotten more strenuous and hectic during the pandemic.

In the United States, back injuries account for approximately 24% of all on the job injuries, and a large number of these of injuries happen to health care workers such as certified nursing assistants (CNA), licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, health aides, radiology technicians and physical therapists.
