Hurt at Work Nurses, CNAs, Therapist, EMTs, Healthcare Workers Top Job Injury List

Hurt at Work Nurses, CNAs, Therapist, EMTs, Healthcare Workers Top Job Injury List

The last two years have been chaotic for us all, but for Healthcare Workers (Nurses, CNAs, Certified Nursing Assistants, EMTs, Emergency Medical Technicians, Therapists, etc.) unbelievably so, and this fact is borne out by the numbers.

In November 2021, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics released a report and listed the top 10 professions that reported job injuries which required time off from work, and the Top 3 Professions were in the Nursing and Healthcare field.  Topping the list for job injuries are Nursing Assistants, also referred to as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA).  Second were Licensed Practical Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses, and at number 3 were Registered Nurses.

Did you know that 60% of Nursing Assistants and CNAs suffer job injuries as a result of their job duties (I would hazard to guess that the number is actually higher), or that they are wont to suffer back injuries (around 4 times as likely) than any other industry? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 12 out of 100 workers in State operated Nursing Homes suffered nonfatal work injuries last year (construction workers had around 8 out of 100 workers suffer job injuries; an average of all jobs is 3 out of 100).  See the the attached article.

Moreover, in many places being a nurse is more dangerous than being a Police Officer due to workplace violence, or that in 2000 healthcare industry workers sustained 4.5 times more work related back injuries than any other industry.  According to government statistics, six of the top 10 professions at the greatest risk for back injuries were: certified nursing assistants (CNA), licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, health aides, radiology technicians and physical therapists.

Healthcare workers spend their entire carriers helping others, and for that we are grateful; if you are a health care worker in Alabama+ and you have suffered a job-related injury, to your back, neck, shoulder, knee or otherwise, be sure to take care of yourself.  If you have suffered a work injury and you have questions, please do not hesitate to  Contact and speak with one of the experienced Alabama Workers Compensation Lawyers at Powell and Denny today.
