Can I Get Disability Benefits for Piriformis Syndrome? Piriformis Syndrome is a rare neuromuscular disorder which is caused when the piriformis muscle (muscle near the top of the hip joint which is important to lower body movement) compresses the sciatic nerve, causing pain, tingling and numbness in the buttocks, pain, numbness, tingling and loss of adequate and consistent control of the hip, leg, knee, ankle and/or foot on the side in which the muscle disrupts sciatic nerve function.
The muscle can be caused to go into spasm by prolonged sitting, running or walking or climbing. Once the sciatic nerve is compressed, the sufferer may experience severe pain down the leg and in the lower back, swelling in the lower back and hip region, numbness and can cause difficulty with walking, sitting or performing most physical activities.
While the Social Security Administration does not directly list piriformis syndrome as a disabling condition, if the condition is serious enough, you could be found to equal listing Listing 1.04, which covers disorders of the spine; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills
